Canon update
Saya will be sent back to her apocalypse where she will stay ONE DAY (really). As ridiculous as it sounds, this day (just like everyday in a zombie apocalypse) was important and shaped Saya a bit more. She will be gone for TWO IN GAME DAYS, meaning she leaves on the 6th and will be back by 8th January.
- When she returns, she will no longer accept staying behind and be a back-up. Finally I'll be able to get her ass in missions.
- After seeing her friend having a mental breakdown, she is much more aware the same can happen to her. She'll finally do something regarding her PTSD.
- And the best, she finally has some hope, because in the chapter I'm taking her from, a lot of good things happened. She has her moral higher than before.
She was also allowed to change her Weapon form. Saya is now a MP5 (silenced submachine gun with a semi-automatic firing mode), same Weapon she is currently using in canon. Her weapon ability is... a bit awful. In full resonance, Saya's ability is Necrosis and Gangrene of the soft tissue, inspired by zombie decay. Ahyup. She will freak when she finds out her ability.
A HUGE TL;DR about both personality update AND Weapon update (including details on how her ability works, for those who really want to know), can be found here.

The manga is currently at the chapter 29.
The mangaka did few more chapters after the mall scene, but went back on hiatus yet again. For the moment, all he releases are pin-ups of the characters, art-books, coloring of older chapters and booklets. There's no mention of the series returning in the future. However, we are hoping with the release of the second season of the anime (we don't know when yet), the manga will be back again.
Now, as for what has been happening, a lot has after they left the mall XD including Hirano having a mental breakdown after having to kill an actual human and not a zombie - that was probably the most important thing happening so far, after the mall scene. There is always so many things happening in each new chapter, it's insane.

I don't remember the chapter number I ended at. I'll probably have to grab and re-read the entire thing; was really happy with the anime season, but it went by too quickly! HotD is one of those series that has me holding my breath with great anticipation... and yet great doubt as to whether it will continue or even reach resolution (in a timely fashion if at all).
So much holding my breath.

The anime was cool, yet different from the manga, and I thought that was a shame. And matrix boobs lol. Aside that, Madhouse always does the most amazing job with their animes. The pace was incredible, it perfectly fits a zombie apocalypse. HOTD is very well made and despite the whole fan service during it, I think it portraits the situation quite realistically; it's a shame the author lost the interest he had in it.

And I was trying my damnedest to figure out where those shots were coming from in the story. Wondered if there were zombie sharks ala GYO waiting to happen or something. But yeah, aside from the ridiculousness, I do enjoy Madhouse pacing an awful lot. I enjoyed it in Hellsing Ultimate and in HotD. Honestly, I read/watch it for everything BUT the fan service; it's a shame that the mangaka probably makes more money doing his h-doujins or is at least more interested in making them than this, :(.

Ahaha. It's strange, because the anime has A LOT more ecchi scenes than the manga itself. Also a lot more of ridiculousness too, not just regarding the fan-service (Saeko flies, for example).
STILL. YEAH. I love it sob. I'm very weak to Zombvie stuff, so I'm biased. But the mangaka is much more interested in his new manga Triage X, which is basically porn without being blunt about it. And he does seem to be more interested in hentai than everything else. It's a shame.

Oh, I had not realized that he had begun something new. That makes the chances of more HotD even lower, :(. It's also possible that he has no idea what to do with the story of HotD anymore. You're right, though; it's a shame.
Oh, and now that I look up, I see even more beach episode icons! Hahaha. I think her hair looks better tied up that way...

That beach episode was something. There was a A LOT of soft porn in it. But the best part was Hirano in a girl's swimming suit. It's canon (http://media.animevice.com/uploads/0/4479/415870-kohta_2.png). If not sort of creepy.
Things like this are the reason why Saya isn't taken from the anime version, but the manga version.

And yeah, when all else fails, stick to the manga. I learned this from FMA, Soul Eater, and now HotD, haha.

Yeahhh, pretty much. I'm hoping season 2 will stick to the manga. Whenever it comes out...

Actually, Saya's family is pretty much that way. They didn't explain her father was Don of an ultra-nationalist group and they didn't go deep into Saya's feelings regarding her parents but MEH. Saya isn't a popular character and they can't just put everything into the anime. I forgive that.
Deviations from the manga includes badly placed scenes. Kumoro and Saeko get separated from the rest of the group after they leave Takagi's state; in the anime, that happens before they arrive to the Takagi Household. In the anime they keep a Humvee to travel around, however in the manga they lose it quickly. There are other details they decided to add just for the heck of it. And of course, the OVA. Which doesn't appear nowhere near the manga, thankfully.
It also includes "bad-ass" scenes that didn't happen and abilities the characters didn't have. Such as Saeko doing somersaults and similar. They also gave Khota all weaponry that he'd never be able to carry by himself - the mangaka kept this relatively realistic, however in the anime, Hirano pulls guns out of his ass if necessary. They also made the nurse lesbian for her friend Rika in the anime (I know there are hints, but nothing extremely explicit as that).
Other thing is Saya's reactions towards Kumuro. In the manga, she shows some feelings for Takashi, but that easily be seen as him being her only friend (because he was her friend) and they soon "fade". In the anime they dragged this to the point of making it look as if she really had romantic feelings for him (see icons, yup).
.... yeaaahhhhhh I rant a lot about my fandoms sob

The part I wasn't sure happened in the manga that happened in the anime was the sort of almost reconciliation that sort of happened between her and her family. Was pretty sure they left on more sour terms because of her complex feelings about her parents and what they do, but I could be wrong. I did feel that the girls in the anime were pulling a bit too strongly towards Takashi than I remembered too, haha.
Let's just pretend the OVA only exists for icons, haha...
Man, now I really want to reread this. Almost done fixing my computer, then I have to find myself a good scanlation or raw list.
Oh, and there was something I wanted to ask you OOCly about future CR. Do you have AIM? May I ping you on it if you do?
no subject
And yup. In the anime, the girls really obsess over him to the point of making it a contest of who gets his attention. In a way, I feel bad for Takashi.
Ohh the last chapters are pretty good, even if the author lost interest. The plot is still amazing. And the scans can be found at manga-reader, that's what i use <: I admit I rarely use AIM lately due to my exams, but you can try to find me. My aim is chocogun. I also have a plurk, if necessary: http://www.plurk.com/vilani
