Getting notifications back without moving email addresses!

Notifications have been crappy for Yahoo!Mail and Hotmail lately, and since I can't sleep even with sleeping pills in my system, I will try to give you guys a viable solution to your notification woes that I hope will help, without forcing you to go through that sometimes unpleasant process of changing your email address. This was particularly important for me since I can't access LJ inbox from work. 8|

Asterisks [*] are alternate steps to that part.

1. Make a gmail account. I know, I know, ANOTHER EMAIL ADDRESS?? But gmail is more friendly to LJ than our sad, sad primary emails. Besides, you'll forget your gmail exists after this is done.

2. While logged into your character account, go here and change your email to the new gmail account.

* If you want the additional and nifty option of getting gmail to sort your mail for you, give this a quick look. TO SUMMARIZE, it means adding +name to your email in LJ (not your gmail account). For example: yukitsu.yk@gmail.com will be put into LJ as yukitsu.yk+spirit@gmail.com.

3. Go to your gmail account and verify the change in email.

4. If you are lazy, do this and every email you get in that gmail account will go to your primary email. And you're done.

4. If you want to be more organized about what emails you get in your primary inbox from your gmail account, go to the filter settings. Meaning this button here:

5. Put lj_notify@livejournal.com in the FROM part. Hit NEXT STEP.

* If you used the +name thing, you can use that in the TO part instead of the LJ notification bot in the FROM part. This is what I did.

6. Set it up to FORWARD TO YOUR PRIMARY EMAIL. If you haven't set up a forwarding email yet, set this up with that link.

7. Hit CREATE FILTER and you're done. It should forward all notifications to your primary email now and you'll never notice the difference. Like magic:

If you want gmail to clean itself, also click on the ARCHIVE and MARK AS READ ticky boxes in step 6 and you'll never even see the clutter in your gmail until you look at ALL MAIL at the left hand side.

If you have questions, just hit me up!

I've used gmail from the beginning and *usually* get all my tags (I think there was only one I didn't get this month) so I also recommend doing this. gmail is very likeable, though, so if anyone thinks about changing addresses in the future it's a good way to go.

Of course, thanks yukeh. And sleeping pills don't help me sleep either. :(
