TYL FAQ POST

Attention, Soul Campaign!

The mods have been gathering some questions that have been raised about the upcoming TYL Event, and have compiled and answered them here in this post. We have also included the timeline of logs happening, mapped out by the RL dates that they will be posted in the community, so that everyone knows how the pace of this event will go.

Are our characters going to be sent to the TYL timeline?

Your characters are not going to be sent into the future. Only Winry, Miranda, Kanda, and Yuuri were sent to the future, and the characters in the TYL timeline are basically your characters ten years from now. NONE of the characters in TYL apart from the four kids will be sent back to the present timeline. Your characters in the present-timeline and the TYL timeline are two different people.

Will our TYL characters have their powers back?

No, they will not, except when exposed to extreme madness. Modified witches have some witch powers and a witch animal, but that is from becoming modified, and these are not their powers becoming unlocked.

Will the TYL Timeline have day change, too?

The TYL timeline does not follow the usual in-game pacing of the days. The logs, which will be put up by the mods, will specify what part of TYL it covers. For example, "Some days after the kids' return, this log spans through a week of the TYL timeline." The next log may indicate, "Two weeks after so and so is announced and will span a week of the timeline."

Overall, Winry, Miranda, Kanda and Yuuri will be spending a few months in TYL.

Is the TYL timeline really going to last until December? How is the timeline going to unfold?

The TYL timeline is not going to last until December. TYL timeline is a part of a bigger event, which begun with the Madness Wavelength and will continue until December, but the TYL timeline itself will only last until October at most. There will be plenty of breaks during the big event which will allow for players to take a rest or come up with their own character plots and CR, and the remainder of the event will happen in the present timeline. Pacing for the event milestones has been considered to include breaks and application cycles.

Please click this link to see the calendar of events for the duration of the TYL timeline.

As you can see, milestones in TYL are evenly and largely spaced out from each other, while the present timeline remains mostly unoccupied. The spacing of TYL events is to ensure that the players have enough time to tag around in the TYL logs without being forced to neglect the present timeline, and without running into the busier times of the game like application cycles and end-of-the-month AC rush.

On the other hand, the present timeline will not have heavy, game-wide mod plots while the TYL timeline is going on, though there will be some NPC logs and activities that your character can participate it and use to build CR with others.

The timeline is subject to change depending on the activity of the TYL timeline.

Do we have to join the TYL timeline?

As we have stated before, you are not required to participate in the TYL timeline. There are many ways out of it, the easiest of which is to state that they were returned home by the BREW before the timeline happens. You also have the option to kill off your characters in the TYL timeline or kill them during the TYL timeline. There are more details here.

The present timeline will still be going on, and you are free to contact us about character plots if you want. The mods would also like to remind everyone not to forget activity in the present timeline!

Can you new characters join the event?

New characters arriving in the September application cycle will still not be allowed to join the TYL timeline. The TYL timeline is targeted to end before the October application cycle rolls around.

How do Communicators work in TYL?

They do not, the magic that made the communicators work are no longer functional, and thus all messages must be hand delivered.

Can TYL logs count for Activity Check?

For now, they can, but the mods may change this if it becomes obvious that the player are neglecting the present timeline.

Can our characters send notes to their present-timeline selves via the four people going back to the past?

If within IC reason and if the four will take them for you, go ahead.

We hope that this clears up the questions, but if you have others to ask, please feel free to do so in this post.

This probably won't apply to me but I think it's probably a good idea to ask anyway: can TYL stuff be used for future activity checks?

[identity profile] lavenderglasses.livejournal.com 2010-08-28 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
My only real worry is about how the new players that enter during the next activity checks will feel with all this going on. It makes plenty of sense to not allow new people to sign up for such a complicated event, but I wonder if new people will get bored or anything with just playing in the normal timeline and making CR and stuff while there's all this cool event going on that they can't take part it. Not that they should be able to participate, that would only complicate things, but I feel like if there's nothing special happening in the normal timeline for the new players and those not participating, new players might end up feeling left out, or get bored and leave the game much sooner than they would have during other circumstances.

The next application cycle, you mean? It's only the September entries that will be coming in during the time the TYL timeline is going on, so it will be easier to manage that. We do intend to supplement the event with NPC activities in present time to get people involved, though they are all optional. NPC activities include BREW viewing, training logs as usual, field trips, intro log, etcetera. Nothing big will be happening in present timeline unless a player proposes something, but there will still be stuff happening regardless! And then the end of TYL will have the kids end up back in present timeline, so things will be happening again.

I get all that, and I couldn't ask the mods to do anymore than they already are (god you guys are overachievers as it is <3), and I can't think of any better way to do it myself. But I asked a friend who plans on apping into the game how she felt about the fact that there would be this huge event going on that they aren't able to join in on. It makes plenty of sense to not allow it, but at the same time I understand when my friend says that it might feel a bit boring for them after a while to only be able to do normal everyday things and CR and such while there's this cool event going on that they can only watch. It's mostly just that I know the first few weeks of joining a game really decide for some people whether they'll stick with it or not, and I'm worried if new people will get bored with not having anything super special awesome going on that they can be involved in while everyone else can have all this fun, and I don't want people dropping out prematurely or anything just because of the time they apped in at.

tl;dr I worry about everything but can't think of any better way to do it.

I understand your worry! But I think (and not speaking for the rest of the mods!) that it's something difficult if not impossible to fix. The only thing I can offer as an assurance right now is that the TYL timeline is fairly low-key in the game itself -- just logs and a few OOC posts -- and that by the time applications roll in, most of the timeline is done anyway, with just a couple of milestones pending.

Although if anyone can think of something special for the new characters coming in to do without it being heavy for the rest of the game, we would be more than happy to arrange it!

Maybe there could be a huge party, with the excuse of welcoming newbies / finding partners for those unpartnered / taking people's minds off the last attack for a moment? It would be light-hearted, entertaining, and could provide good CR, maybe...

/probably not too helpful. orz

Any help is helpful! I will consider how to best throw one up. 8Db Spirit, for example, lauves that sort of thing.

/crawls back here

heyyyyyy mods, i have a question. ♥ so um, as far as the TYL timeline goes, would it be permissible if, say, naruto wrote a note to himself, and asked one of our time traveling kids to deliver it to his present day self?

[identity profile] cardfortress.livejournal.com 2010-09-02 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding this question, because Near would do the same thing. >___>
