SC IRC CHAN PIMP POOOOST

Hi guys this is Aviy and I am here to tell you all about the new SOUL CAMPAIGN IRC CHAN!

If you already know how to use IRC, here is the relevant information to come join us!

Server: irc.nightstar.net
Ports: 6665-6669
Channel: #soulcampaign

NOTE: If you don't want to use mIRC, see the comments for other solutions!

Okay now on to the mIRC beginners guide.

But FIRST: Aviy is not a IRC guru. I can help you with basic 'AVIY WHERE IS THIS HOW DOES I' problems but I really only use it's most basic functions so if you want to get complicated, google is going to be your bff.

Now!

Step 1: If you are Windows user, download the mIRC client from here.

If you are a MAC or Linux user. =D; I can't help you. If anyone is a Mac user and knows of a good IRC client, please do tell in the comments below.

Step 2: Install it! Keep in mind that it will tell you this is a trial, and after X number of days will start asking you for money. HOWEVER. You do not have to buy it ever. When it starts to tell you go register/purchase, just wait an extra ten seconds or so and you can use it normally. Periodically this doesn't happen and you have to restart the program, but that's it. I've been using it for about five years. (OF COURSE. By all means do purchase it if you wish. But the program does allow you to use it indefinitely for free.)

Step 3: Once you open the program you will see the above options thinger. This will open every time you start the program, but after everything is set up, you will just hit 'Connect'.

Fill out the Name/Email address/etc stuff. Some servers require you to have an email address listed to register your handles, I believe nightstar is one of those. Your nickname is what people will see you as, and the alternative nickname is what pops up if you log in while someone else is using your name, or while you get knocked offline and come back but still have an open session under your other nick (it will eventually get knocked off on it's own once it fails pings).

Fill that out then go to Connect >> Servers on the left hand side.

Step 4: From here hit Add on the right side of the window, and this little 'Add Server' window will pop up. You can put whatever you want in 'Description' and 'Group'. In 'IRC Server' and 'Ports' you want to have what I have. No password is needed for this server, so leave that blank and hit Add down below.

Step 5: Your window will now have the Nightstar server under whatever group you indentified, along with the many default servers. (You can see mine to the left in this image). Fight Nightstar and then hit Select.

Step 6: Now if you go back to the Connect tab, under yo ur nicknames it should say 'Server: Nightstar: (Whatever you put in as the description)'. Hit Connect (the button) and the window will disappear and your Nightstart server window will pop up.

Step 7: Your server window for Nightstar will pop up! You CANNOT CLOSE THIS WINDOW, or you will disconnect from the server. It will ping you periodically to make sure you are still connected, and if the server owners send any messages across the server you will see them there, but you can basically minimize it and ignore it. It's important to note that if you want to log onto OTHER SERVERS you can! You just have to leave their window open.

Anyway, it will also automatically open your mIRC Favorites by clicking Add you can create a favorite channel and then just click on it every time you log in (you can also set things for autojoin but I don't bother). You want to put #soulcampaign in the 'Channel:' section and the rest doesn't matter, unless you want to join on connect, in which case click that ticky box.

Then hit Add again and yay! You have a favorite channel! You can put in as many as you want and highlight the ones you want to enter, then hit Join and mIRC will open those channels for you.

And that is all you really need to know to get into and start using IRC. But here is some additional info, I marked some stuff on the menu bar in the image above:

Connect/(Disconnect): What it says, will connect or disconnect you from your default servers.

Options: This opens that same window that appears when you start mIRC, in case you want to go back and edit...anything. More on this later.

Favorites: Your mIRC Favorites that also open automatically once you connect to a server.

Address Book: Mostly important for SETTING YOUR PINGS. More on this in a second.

Color Scheme: If you don't like the default colors of mIRC, you can set them however you want. Note this is NOT pings.

Let's talk HIGHLIGHTS more commonly called 'pings'. Pings are what they sound like: you can set certain words to 'ping' you with a subtle beep whenever they are spoken in a channel you are in. IRC can move pretty fast, and you don't want to stare at it forever! So it is essential to set your pings so that whenever someone says your name you get an auditory indicator to go look at IRC. Because IRC doesn't require a lot of CPU power, you can run it forever, even leave it on when you go to sleep, then scroll up to look for your pings when you wake up in case people were talking about you =)

So setting pings! Click the Address Book icon, then go to the Highlights tab on the right hand side of that window. Make sure the 'Enable highlight' tickybox is checked, then click Add and you will ge the 'Edit Highlight' window seen above.

SEE MINE FOR REFERENCE. Enter any word you want to be pinged for with commas between them but no spaces. These can be your personal user names, your characters names, the names of your canons, or whatever. I ALSO SUGGEST everyone add scping to their pings. This would be an effective way for the mods to get the attention of everyone in chan at the same time. Or for someone who is putting up an event post to go "scping (LINK)" so everyone sees it.

'Match on' means you will get pings if the above words are said in the message or are part of someone's username.

'Case sensitive' is useful to pick if your character has a commonly spoken name like 'Night' and you don't want to get a ping every time someone says 'good night'. But other wise I suggest leaving it off or you miss people capslocking at you.

'Color' is the HIGHLIGHT COLOR text will appear in when people say one of your pings. Everytime someone says my name it appears in teal so I can find it very quickly.

'Play sound' is what sound is played when someone says one of your pings. The beep is best as it's subtle and not annoying.

Then you just hit Okay and it will be added to your highlights.

Notice that I have multiple highlight strings. I created ones for my friends and set the 'Match on' to 'Nickname' so whenever one of my bffs talks I see their text in a different color. This allows me to give them the MOSTEST ATTENTION. However I turned the ping function off so I don't get a ping every time one of them talks or that would be annoying.

mIRC Options: Okay, go click the Options button and just browse the various tabs. IRC is actually a very powerful and diverse client. People have been using it to send people manga and anime and music long before there were websites dedicated to that. You can set up folders on your computer so people can access your files and download your stuff! You can go to the appropriate chans and download other peoples stuff! You can create 'bots' which are strings of code that will perform specific functions when triggered by specific text. These are used for everything to AUTO-WITTY REJOINERS to creating dice for people playing D&D and so on.

I can't tell you how to do those things! But if it sounds interesting, google around. It's actually not that complicated.

ONE KEY TIP: sometimes for unknown reason mIRC will set itself to autostick ABOVE all your other windows, and you have to actually go up to it and hit minimize to look at another window. To fix this go to Display >> Options >> Windows... and unclick the 'mIRC main window always on top' ticky.

OKAY GUYS WE ARE IN THE HOMESTRETCH HERE. Here are some basic commands you can use in chan in case you have NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE.

/nick (new name) will change your nick in IRC

/me (action) will make your text appear as an action as in *Aviy slaps Celi with a large trout

/kick (name) will kick someone else from chan. You can only do this if you are opped though (there will be a little + next to your name)

/help brings up IRC help window!

/msg (name) will send a private message to someone

/query (name) will send a private message to someone AND open a private IM window. (You can also open one of these by double clicking their name)

And finally HOW TO REGISTER YOUR NICK AND WHAT THAT IS:

Registering your nick means you basically privatize your nick and if you get on and someone else is using it, you can kick them off. THAT SAID, please understand that another RP uses this server, it is full of my friends, and I would hate to see people ninja shanking each other for nicks (=

I will tell you how, but since SC tends to favor people going by their online aliases instead of their character names, this hopefully won't be an issue.

/msg nickserv (YOUR NICK) (YOUR PASSWORD) (YOUR EMAIL)

You will then get an email which, I believe, gives you a code telling you what to do.

And finally, as I said this is the same server that runs another RP that myself and several other members of SC are in. So you may see us jump around on various nicks at times, and see us idling on character names that we do not play in SC. I think we will probably TRY TO AVOID THAT for characters who are also played by someone else in SC, but don't take it personally if if we mess up on that account. I am also sorry if I am on a different nick every time you see me 8D;

ANYWAY. I hope this has been helpful. Hit me up if you have questions, but I reserve the right to point FM in your direction or just link you to a solution I found via google.

I CAN SAY if you have a firewall you will probably need to open the ports listed above.

Anyway yes. Go forth and come join us in chan o/
